Sources & licence
Where the text comes from, how it is licensed, and what on this site is the source material versus our own additions.
Last updated: 2026-06-09
Summary
This tool uses two separate bodies of work. The Shakespeare play texts and the data derived from them are based on the PlayShakespeare.com XML editions, copyright © 2005–2024 PlayShakespeare.com, licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.3.
The speech classifications, length bands, search index, and the finder interface are this site's own additions, generated from or layered over that source. This page records the boundary between the two.

Legal statement
This project uses data derived from the PlayShakespeare.com XML editions of Shakespeare's works, forked from severdia/PlayShakespeare.com-XML. The source material is copyright © 2005–2024 PlayShakespeare.com and is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.3. This project preserves attribution to PlayShakespeare.com. Generated classifications, metadata, and interface presentation are site additions; where any such addition is legally dependent on GFDL-licensed material, the GFDL continues to apply to it.
Reuse
The Shakespeare source text and the data derived from it may be reused under the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.3. The site's own interface, design, and editorial or coaching material may not be copied or adapted without permission, except where permitted by law or unless otherwise stated.
What this site adds
The following are additions generated from or layered over the PlayShakespeare source. They are not part of the upstream PlayShakespeare XML:
- Speech classifications: monologue and substantial soliloquy, with the per-speech basis.
- Length bands (Short, Audition, Long) and the verse / prose / play-type tagging.
- Computed line counts, word counts, and estimated run times.
- The punctuation- and elision-tolerant search index.
- The finder interface, filtering, and presentation.
No endorsement
PlayShakespeare.com does not endorse this project unless explicitly stated.
Updates
If the fork or upstream source is refreshed, the licence must be re-checked and this page updated. The source commit, generated-data build, and accessed date above are the authoritative record of what was used to build the current site.
